Lummus and Resynergi announce the commercial use of microwave plastic pyrolysis technology
2025-03-10

March 6, 2025 - Lummus Technology, a global provider of process technology and value-driven energy solutions, and Resynergi, a leading innovator in modular plastics recycling technology, announced the commercialization of Resynergi's continuous microwave assisted Pyrolysis (CMAP) module. Lummus Technology and Resynergi formed this partnership in 2024 and have made rapid progress in developing and commercializing the CMAP technology, which converts plastic waste into cyclic pyrolysis products at a significantly higher rate and efficiency than traditional pyrolysis methods.

Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, said: "This milestone demonstrates how Lummus Technology and Resynergi are advancing the circular economy through their solutions, making it easier and faster to turn plastic waste into a valuable resource. As this technology becomes commercialized, we can work with our customers to integrate it into their existing infrastructure, helping to close the plastic waste cycle and drive sustainability in our industry."

Unlike traditional pyrolysis, Resynergi's CMAP module uses microwaves to break down plastic molecules faster, with significantly less CO2 emissions compared to traditional polymer production. Its modular design allows for rapid deployment, allowing units to be installed and running in months rather than years. Lummus Technology will leverage its global manufacturing network and long history of supplying modular and proprietary equipment to manufacture and supply modules.

Brian Bauer, CEO of Resynergi, said: "The world can't wait to bring large plants and recycling facilities online to address our growing plastic waste crisis. The commercial availability of CMAP modules is an important milestone for the future viability, speed and impact of the plastics cycle. We are honored to have Lummus Technology as our trusted partner in bringing our technology to market to make advanced recycling not only feasible and profitable, but also friendly, safe and clean for local municipalities."

Technical highlight

High quality output: Meets the criteria set by the refinery partners for chemical recovery of pyrolytic oil.

Fast conversion: Using microwave energy, plastic molecules decompose faster than traditional pyrolysis reactors.

Clean energy efficiency and environmentally friendly processes: The clean products produced by this module significantly reduce the CO2 footprint compared to conventional polymer production.

Modular design: Quickly deployable and scalable, making advanced recycling more affordable and versatile.

Compact footprint: The reactor footprint is reduced by a factor of 10, meeting the typical footprint requirements of the municipality for a "recycling plant."

Digital operation

The Resynergi module can also leverage the digital capabilities of Lummus digital, a joint venture between Lummus Technology and TCG digital, to ensure reliable and sustainable operations. Available features can integrate data collection, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. They can also monitor module installation, provide real-time data to improve decision making, and enable operators to access expert advice and remote support.
